When we think of the Apostles denying Christ in scripture, we especially think of Peter. As we heard last week during Holy Week, he explicitly denied Christ three times “before the cock crowed.”
Today we hear of another, less explicit way of denying Christ. Christ appears to Apostles and rebukes them for their unbelief. He had provided multiple proofs of his resurrection, yet the Apostles still refused to believe. The mystery of the resurrection is an opportunity for us to more fully submit our intellect and will in the act of faith as we are called to do in Dei Verbum from Vatican II. We do not explicitly deny Christ, but as we contemplate the mystery, everyday we can open our hearts just a little more in order to more fully submit ourselves in awe and wonder of the resurrection.
